Most real estate agents take their new staff off the street, sending them out under the agency’s banner the next day. It’s not like that at Tommy’s. When we are recruiting (which isn’t often), we’re looking for particular types – team players, people who understand the Tommy’s culture, generally people who are interested in property but have never been agents before (we don’t want any other companies’ bad habits in our staff room).
So what’s the first step to working under the Tommy’s colours? It’s your first sales job: contact the management of the office in your area, and convince us to employ you.
Our recruitment policy has been a major factor in the outstanding growth and success of our Company since its inception in May 1999.
We look to attract people to our company who are willing to accept change and to take on board our philosophy of ethical business practices and professional and skilled service to our clients.
In fact, we never actually advertise directly for salespeople at all, but rather handpick our team, often from personal referrals and recommendations.
Personal attributes
Character and life skills matter most. After that, we focus on each person’s skills, personality, appearance and motivation to succeed. Those looking to join us must be willing to learn and accept new skills, and be prepared to use them.
Training
We prefer people who are new to real estate to join us. That’s because these individuals have no established industry habits and practices and are more likely to benefit from being trained in 'the Tommy’s way'.
There’s no pattern for success we’ve found, and no previous work experience record that guarantees people will excel although we believe that motivated "self starters" with full support from their spouse or partner have a distinct advantage. Our successful people come from all walks of life.
All our salespeople though have one thing in common. They are trained by Tommy Heptinstall and must be prepared to adopt his high standards and expectations. Training is given in selling skills, presentation skills, negotiation techniques and marketing. Everybody receives coaching in the company culture of loyalty and team play, and everyone is expected to take ownership of issues, be proactive and operate professionally and ethically.
The job
We strive to act in the best interests of our vendor clients and to maximise the financial return on every sale. Success in real estate comes from being prepared to work long and irregular hours. A passion for helping people achieve their property goals is what it’s all about.
