Berhampore

Berhampore lies between Newtown and Island Bay, so it’s close to the coast.  Its ethnic and socio-economic diversity makes it a good area for those starting on the housing ladder, with plenty of interesting character houses offering ‘do up’ potential.  Facilities include municipal 18-hole golf links (‘links’ means a golf course near the seashore), a lawn bowls club, a primary school and it’s the home of the city council’s nurseries.  All just five minutes drive south from Wellington’s city centre.

The suburb was named after Berhampore in Bengal (location of the infamous Indian Mutiny of 1857) so it’s hardly surprising many of the streets have Indian names.
