Northland
Northland is a popular city fringe suburb, with many houses offering city and harbour views or looking back across to the hills. It’s only minutes from the CBD, Botanic Gardens, and Parliament; with easy access from the motorway and city. Properties include ex-state houses, old villas, 1920's bungalows and modern, purpose-built mansions.
The suburb attracts an eclectic mix of academics, public servants, musicians and artists. Its shopping centre has a strong emphasis on takeaways, with several pizza options, making it ideal for working couples.
The suburb commemorates Viscount Northland, killed in WWI, son of the Earl of Ranfurly (Governor-General 1897-1904) who donated the Ranfurly Shield. Northland was originally part of Governor’s Farm, where vegetables and dairy products were produced for Government House (then in Thorndon); Farm and Governor Roads once led directly to the vice-regal cabbage patch.
